Special Aid Group

Dedicated to bringing disabled children from Special Schools/Hospitals in
Chernobyl affected Belarus to Britain for recuperative holidays

  • The contamination from the Chernobyl disaster causes children many health problems and it is estimated that only 10% of the children living in Belarus are healthy
  • Health consequences of the disaster include thyroid cancers, leukaemia and other blood disorders and genetic disorders
  • Because of medical problems many children, from a very young age, have to live in Special Schools away from their families.
  • There are many children who are orphaned or abandoned or whose parents are simply unable to look after them because of their own problems.
  • Life is hard for the people of Belarus and many of the everyday things we take for granted are in short supply or expensive.
  • Children can be helped by having a holiday--good food, clean air, exercise, all help to improve their immune systems.
  • Experiencing a different culture, meeting new people and having fun and extra attention and love can give them hope for the future.

  • This small group of volunteers invite 12 children and three of their carers each year around Easter time.
  • The children are from the Special School/Orphanage in Ospipovichi.  Because of their individual needs the children stay together at a church hostel in Rufford, Lancashire, rather then with host families like other groups.
  • Volunteers work to raise money for air fares, accommodation, transport, food and entertainment for the children who also  receive clothing and gifts during their visit.
  • Group members and supporters share in caring for the children during their residential stay.
